Location: Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn, NY Department: Culinary | Reports to: Executive Chef Employment Type: Full-Time, Salaried Yellow Magnolia Café, located inside Brooklyn Botanic Garden, is a chef-driven, modern American restaurant focused on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Our menu highlights vegetable-centric small plates, heartier main dishes, plant-inspired desserts, and a seasonally inspired beverage program. By celebrating the beauty of the Garden and its connection to the Brooklyn community, we create memorable dining experiences for every guest. We are seeking a Sous Chef to join our culinary leadership team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated, hospitality-minded professional who is passionate about cooking, thrives in a fast-paced kitchen, and is eager to help lead and develop a talented team. What You’ll Do Culinary Leadership: Supervise and motivate BOH staff, set expectations for food quality, consistency, and presentation, and foster a positive, collaborative work environment. Production & Execution: Oversee daily prep and service, ensuring all dishes meet Yellow Magnolia Café standards. Taste and adjust seasoning on all items before service. Menu Collaboration: Work closely with the Executive Chef on seasonal menu development, daily specials, and event menus. Inventory & Ordering: Assist with ordering, and promote proper storage of food and supplies while monitoring product quality and minimizing waste. Training & Development: Mentor cooks and prep staff, sharing techniques and best practices to build skill and confidence on the line. Food Safety & Cleanliness: Enforce compliance with DOH regulations and maintain the highest standards of sanitation and organization in the kitchen. Administrative Support: Assist with scheduling, labor management, and production planning to meet budgetary and operational goals. Event Support: Participate in catering and banquet production for special events held throughout the Garden. Preferred Qualifications 2+ years of experience as a Sous Chef or Kitchen Supervisor in a chef-driven, upscale, or high-volume restaurant or cultural institution. Strong culinary skills with a passion for seasonally focused, locally sourced cuisine. Experience with catering, banquets, or large-scale food production. Proven ability to train, lead, and inspire a team. Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with both BOH and FOH leadership. ServSafe certification (or ability to obtain).
